CHASING TRANE : THE JOHN COLTRANE DOCUMENTARY
1 X 100' HD
DIRECTED BY JOHN SPENCE
A CREW NECK PRODUCTION
An exploration of the global power and impact of the music of John Coltrane where the passions, experiences and forces that shaped his life and revolutionary sounds are revealed.
The film tracks the development of Coltrane’s compositions, from the achingly beautiful pop riffs of the ‘50s to the improvisatory avant- garde prayers of the ‘60s.
Through home-movie footage, Coltrane is documented in his person, as he was in his music, as a seemingly imposing figure... probably the closest jazz has come to a biblical figure, but somehow more relaxed, casual, not searching for that somewhere else but instead to be happy right there.
Telling the story of this very public-figure of John Coltrane, the film is packed-full with rare performance clips, alongside insightful interviews with family, colleagues and famous fans lifting-the-lid of the story behind one of the world’s most famous jazz musicians of all time.
With narration by life-long Coltrane-fan Denzel Washington, the film features interviews with Ravi Coltrane (son of John Coltrane), Reggie Workman (from John Coltrane’s group), Sonny Rollins and Carlos Santana.
